How to use the GELDOC computer in the molecular lab

Published on Author Giorgio Gilestro

The gel machine has now access to the college network and you can easily access the pictures you take in the lab from your own computer.

Here is how to do it:

  1. If not logged in yet, login with local user "geldoc" ( password "edas%290" ).
  2. If you don't have one yet, create a subfolder with your name on the G drive. You will find a shortcut to the G drive on the desktop. Obviously, this step needs to be done only once.
  3. Take as many pictures as you want using the usual Kodak software.
  4. Save your pictures/files in your OWN subfolder, the one you created on step 2.
  5. Clean the working space and close any data of yours. Please don't leave any data unsaved or windows unnecessarily open.
  6. All the contents of the G drive are publicly shared.

Now you will have a network-connected drive where all your geldocs pictures are saved and that can be accessed by any computer on which you are logged in. Please, consider that drive only as a TEMPORARY buffer space. Do not store picture in there forever and, especially, be aware that you will have to arrange your own backups as usual.
To access your files from your Windows PC, follow these steps:

  1. On Windows XP: Click on the start menu and click on "run". On Windows 7:  Click on the start menu
  2. Type "LD-RYUSTOLAB" and hit enter. A new explorer window will open.
  3. Click with the right mouse button the folder called "Gel Pictures" and select "Map network drive".
  4. Pick the letter of the virtual drive you want to associate (for instance G:) and make sure that you checked the box "reconnect at logon".

To access from your mac:

  1. Go to "Go" then "Connect to server"
  2. Type smb://LD-RYUSTOLAB and hit enter
  3. Login with you normal Imperial College credential
  4. Select "Gel Picture" (should be the only entry)
  5. Go to File in the finder and click "Add to sidebar" to bookmark it
